LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (June 25, 2021) — Violinist, speaker, and social justice advocate Vijay Gupta releases When the Violin, a solo recording of music that meditates on themes of loss, loneliness, and forgiveness, including the world-premiere recording of Reena Esmail’s When the Violin for unaccompanied violin, Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Lachen verlernt, and J.S. Bach’s Sonata No. 1 in G minor. The release is the first in a planned annual series of six recordings pairing Bach’s six violin sonatas and partitas with contemporary and commissioned works with the goal of “reanimating” and contextualizing the familiar Bach pieces.

A 2018 MacArthur Fellow and Founder of Los Angeles’ Street Symphony, Mr. Gupta will release When the Violin on his newly created label Vidya Projects via Bandcamp on Friday, July 9. The phrase “vidya” comes from a prayer to Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning and music. Mr. Gupta says he named his label Vidya “because we are always at the beginning of knowledge.” He plans to release solo, chamber, and chamber orchestra recordings as well as multimedia works on the label.

The thematic tone of When the Violin is expressed in the poem that inspired Ms. Esmail’s piece. It is a poem by the 14th-century Sufi poet Hafiz that begins:

When
The violin
Can forgive the past

It starts singing.
