ATHENS, GREECE (April 24, 2023) — The Greek National Opera (GNO) presents leading French director Olivier Py’s new production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, following his acclaimed production of Berg’s Wozzeck at GNO in 2020. Olivier Py, who has directed more than 40 operas around the world, embarks on his first staging of Madama Butterfly with a production that places the orchestra onstage and fills the outdoor venue with the aesthetics and colors of America and Japan. The performance will be led by GNO conductor Vassilis Christopoulos featuring set designs and costumes by Py’s long-time collaborator Pierre-André Weitz. The opera is presented as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, one of the oldest running festivals in Europe. Performances will take place at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on June 1, 4, 7, & 10, 2023.
