NEW YORK, NEW YORK (February 28, 2023) — When pipa virtuoso Wu Man immigrated to the United States over 30 years ago from China, she had the goal of giving her lute-like instrument—which has a history of over 2,000 years—a new role in both traditional and contemporary music. Today she was named as one of nine recipients of a prestigious 2023 National Heritage Fellowship bestowed by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). On Wednesday, March 8 she will be celebrated as one of Asia Society’s 2023 Asia Arts Game Changers at an awards ceremony in New York City, reflecting that she has succeeded in reaching wider audiences and crossing cultural and musical borders.
