Lara Downes Releases World Premiere Recording of Margaret Bonds' "I Believe, Credo No. 2" & Launches New Initiative "I Believe"

NEW YORK (June 16, 2022)—Musician, activist, and cultural catalyst Lara Downes performs the world premiere recording of Margaret Bonds' “I Believe, Credo No. 2” in its original solo piano manuscript version from 1964, released today on Rising Sun Music. A leading presence from the Harlem Renaissance through the 1960s, Bonds would later score the solo piano piece for baritone, chorus and orchestra, set to W. E. B. Du Bois' famous prose poem Credo, proclaiming his philosophy of racial equality. “I Believe, Credo No. 2” is inspired by the second stanza of the poem: “Especially do I believe in the Negro Race; in the beauty of its genius, the sweetness of its soul, and its strength in that meekness which shall yet inherit this turbulent earth.”

The poem Credo and Margaret Bonds’ work have also inspired the launch of Downes’ new initiative, “I Believe,” inviting young people across the United States to share what they believe in, creating a "credo" for our time and a vision of our future by voicing the beliefs that can unite us in a vision of shared humanity and a greater good.
