DETROIT, MICHIGAN (NOVEMBER 15, 2021) — In 1997, Aaron P. Dworkin, a bi-racial violinist and undergraduate student at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, looked at the classical music field in which he hoped to forge a career and wished to see greater representation of musicians of color. He decided to launch a competition to seek out, encourage, and celebrate Black and Latinx musicians with the goal of guiding them towards professional careers. He named the new competition “Sphinx.”

Twenty-five years later, Sphinx has evolved into the multi-faceted Sphinx Organization, the Detroit-based, nationally-focused social justice organization dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts.
