This exclusive hardcover edition, designed by world-renowned artist Wolfgang Tillmans, also includes a video documentary, Short Rides with John Adams, about his residency with the orchestra, two bonus videos with John Adams in conversation with horn player Sarah Willis and director Peter Sellars, and an extensive booklet with an essay by Alex Ross (“Multifarious Music – The Composer John Adams”). The John Adams Edition is available at www.berliner-philharmoniker-recordings.com, in the Berlin Philharmonie shop, and from selected specialist retailers.

Sir Simon Rattle says:

“John’s music has an unbelievable energy and joy and hunger for life that transmits itself to people of all ages. He’s managed to keep a special depth of humanity, and I think that comes through in the music.”

John Adams says:

“A first encounter with the Berliner Philharmoniker is thrilling for any musician, whether you’re a composer or a conductor. And at the same time you have the jitters because you do not know what to expect. I found it wonderful! The first thing I felt was how concerned everybody was to get it right. My only regret is that I live so far away … because otherwise I’d be there all the time.”

The Berliner Philharmoniker first performed John Adams’s music in October 2001 and later commissioned the two-act opera A Flowering Tree, whose German premiere, directed by Peter Sellars, took place in the Philharmonie in December 2006. During his 2016-17 season as Composer-in-Residence, Mr. Adams was involved with the orchestra as both a composer and as a conductor of some of his most important works.
